Grain Leather Bag Guide

The grain side refers to the smooth, textured grained surface of the outer side of the leather. Use Saphir's smooth leather care range of products to preserve and enhance the life of your grain leather bag.

Step 1: Brush off dust

Just like your leather shoes, bags also need to be prepared first before proceeding with any form of restoration or treatment. To begin, brush off any superficial dust on your leather bag using a horsehair brush. Hold the brush firmly and brush in a ‘back-and-forth’ motion over the entire bag.

Step 2: Apply Aqueous Cleanser

A gentle cleaner to remove daily soiling. It prepares the leather by opening its pores and enabling it to absorb nourishing ingredients from the Saphir Lotion in the next step.

With a clean cotton cloth wrapped tightly around your first two fingers, apply a coin-sized amount of the Cleanser onto the cotton cloth. Massage the product into the leather using small circular motions. After each wipe, roll the cloth over to a clean side and repeat the application until you have wiped the entire bag.

Step 3: Apply Leather Bag Conditioner

The Saphir Medaille d’Or Leather Lotion has been developed mainly for leather bags and articles by nourishing and rehydrating them. This creamy formula is easy to apply and will leave a soft touch and natural shine to the leather.

With a clean cotton cloth wrapped tightly around your first two fingers, apply a tiny amount of the Lotion onto the cotton cloth. Massage the product into the leather using small circular motions. Once the part of the cloth becomes dirty, roll the cloth over to a clean side and repeat this application until you have covered the entire bag.

Step 4: Buff With Boar Hair Brush

It is important to brush the bag with a boar hair brush to push the leather lotion into the pores of the leather. This is to ensure that the lotion is permeated and absorbed well into the leather.

Hold the brush firmly and brush vigorously in a 'back-and-forth' motion. Take note to apply pressure when brushing the bag.

Step 5: Dry Buffing with a Clean Cotton Cloth

Wrap a clean part of a dry cotton cloth around your first two fingers and wipe the bag to remove any excess lotion that has not been absorbed into the leather. Not only that, you will also be spreading the lustre all over the bag. At this point, you will notice a natural shine on the leather.

Step 5: Apply Waterproofing Spray

Shake the can of Super Invulner Spray before use. Spray it about 30cm away from the bag in a well-ventilated area. Take note to not over-saturate the bag. Allow the bag to rest and dry completely for at least 30 minutes.
